Can we survive on £5 a week? £2.50 each? A few weeks ago the wife and I took a long hard look at our budgets, and realized that we were spending too much on food - we were giving out cash hand over fist to the the retailers and pretty much had not much to show for it, apart from a few extra kilo’s. Anyway, we reviewed our budget and set ourselves a maximum weekly spend of £5 a week. Is it possible to spend only £5 a week on food? Is £5 food a week achievable? Well now, a month into our experiment and the good news is that we have £5 left over, and have a good supply of last weeks food ready for the eating. Oh yes, if you are careful with your purchases then it is very easy for a couple to survive on £5 a week. The secret to curbing spending on food is to critically analyse portion sizes and down size your brands, also to do away with processed foods and eat like a cave man!

There is a point one when stops and takes a good hard look at the life that they are leading, when you admire or curse the actions that you have taken to see what your entire sum of experiences and actions have molded. I have recently undergone such a life review, and to be honest, the current state of being is pretty awesome. However, there are some terms and labels that apply, some categories that I have fallen into - accidentally found myself to have become. Whilst reviewing my current state of being, I have some what alarmingly discovered that I am a. . . a Prepper! Really? Am I? Does that label apply to me? Surely not! After all, my view of preppers tend to be ex forces who are preparing for some catastrophe or incident, they have secret hide aways in the woods, stock piles of food stored for when the Shit hits the fan, and they arm themselves to protect their families from looters. Well now, do I fit that category? Well now, lets see. 12 years served in HM Forces, and I do think that there may well be some incident or event locally, nationally or internationally that will have a severe effect on the standard of life if my community and family. I find myself perusing the local Resilience Forums for updates on threats, intelligence and the contingency plans in place. I have a dedicated room filled with tinned food, military ration packs, dried and preserved food and dried carbs. And a riffle sits in a handy position. . . I don’t have any hideaways in the woods, but I do have quite a few dens deep in the forests! What have I become? Am I a prepper?? |
